“Gwyneth” (20"x 24" oil) |
Karin Wells graciously shares the techniques she used to create this award winning portrait titled "Gwyneth", which won the Certificate of Excellence at the Portrait Society of America's International Portrait Competition in Philadelphia in 2008.
Karin used a variety of techniques when creating this striking portrait. She starts with an acrylic underpainting, mostly in earth tones. Then adds opaque oils and transparent glazes. Her tip for creating an acetate overlay is a wonderful idea for double checking your accuracy when portrait painting, as we sometimes stray from the original drawing as we progress! Karin is obviously a skilled artist, but don't let that intimidate you.....give her ideas a try! ;-)
