Welcome!

I believe anyone can learn to paint...but sometimes it takes a lot of practice. One of the best ways to learn is from the many free tutorials available on the net. On this blog I'm sharing my extensive collection of bookmarks of some of the best and most helpful tutorials I've found, both step-by-step and video demos, oil and acrylic, beginner and advanced.

For ease of finding just what you want, tutorials are sorted a few ways. Navigate by category-subject or by artist as shown below. Also, you'll find a list of keywords at very bottom of page for a more specific search....Enjoy! Mary

"I have often had people say, 'It must be nice to be so gifted'. And to this, I always have a little laugh. Yes, talent is nice, but it won't get you very far unless you develop your skills."
- - Watercolor artist Brenda Swenson
"A landscape painting is a window to vast distance." ---David Dunlop
"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life." ~~~William Faulkner

Painting and Observing

To quote western artist Phil Starke: "Painting and observing directly from life is the best way to learn to paint, but studying other paintings is essential also. Knowledge about painting and technique has been handed down through history so there's no sense in re-inventing the wheel...."

Study Other Artists

"Study paintings to see how other artists simplify shapes or how heavy or thin they apply the paint is helpful in developing your own view of nature. Don't study just one artist, but as many as you can. Look at how they treat edges, hard or soft. Look at how they see color, do they push temperature contrast or emphasize muted color harmony...." Phil Starke

Words of Wisdom

“Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.”...Henry Van Dyke

"One always begins by imitating."...Eugéne Delacroix

"However you choose to paint, get it right in every necessary respect. That does not mean "tight" or detailed.".... Richard Schmid
